From Parental Control to Joint Family Oversight

Our research aims to highlight and alleviate the complex tensions around online safety, privacy, smartphone usage in families so that parents teens can work together better manage mobile privacy security-related risks. We developed a application ("app") for Community Oversight of Privacy Security ("CO-oPS") had assess whether it would be applicable use with their families. CO-oPS is an Android app allows group users co-monitor apps installed on one another's devices permissions granted those apps. conducted study 19 parent-teen (ages 13-17) pairs understand how they currently managed safety within family then them install, use, evaluate app. found both gave little consideration before installing new or granting permissions. When using CO-oPS, participants liked increased transparency into way facilitated communication, but were less inclined features in-app messaging hide from another. Key themes related power imbalances between surfaced made co-management challenging. Parents more open collaborative oversight than teens, who felt was not place monitor parents, even though often believed lacked technological expertise themselves. sheds light why practices managing may beneficial also quite difficult implement practice. provide recommendations overcoming these challenges based insights gained our study.
